About
When I was young, I practically ate, slept and breathed golf. And when I wasn’t in the backyard practising pitch shots, I was drawing golf holes. In scrap books, in my school diary, on napkins….pretty much anywhere I could. I never dreamed though, that I could make a living from this idle doodling.
I started golf renderings after my hand drawn sketches became increasingly popular through my work in golf course design*. Working on the new course at St. Andrews Beach for Tom Doak and MCGD in 2002, I undertook a pencil rendering of the layout to help promote membership sales and soon discovered that others shared my love for hand drawn holes. Before long, other clubs approached me, having decided that a hand drawn course guide or rendering had more appeal than a photograph or anything a computer could produce.
With golf course design as my main focus, I take on a limited number of projects each year.
* For 10 years Mike was a design associate with Michael Clayton Golf Design and played key roles in numerous new and redesign projects around Australia including RACV Country Club (Healesville), RACV Resort (Torquay), Peninsula Country Golf Club, Victoria Golf Club and Royal Adelaide. In 2010 he formed a new company with Geoff Ogilvy, Mike Clayton and Ashley Mead – www.ogilvyclayton.com
